Acorns make sunflowers!

As part of our topic ‘Flowers and Insects’ we decided to plant some seeds to see what might happen.

We learnt all about what a seed needs to grow, so got some soil, a pot, a mini greenhouse to keep them warm, and of course some water!

We put them all together with our class grown ups, and now we just have to wait and see what happens next. Watch this space!

Bee-ing a Beebot 🐝

In Acorn class today we were going to do a lesson all about computing with our Beebots but silly Mr Butcher forgot to charge them, oh no!

“Never mind,” he said “luckily I’ve got a whole class full of Beebots…”

So this afternoon Acorn class were walking around a big grid in the playground pretending to be Beebots! We were forming commands, using our left and right, sequencing and following simple algorithms.

On a TREE-sure hunt! 🌲🌳

Today Acorn class had a lovely afternoon out in the sunshine looking closely at all of the different species of trees in our field.

First of all we learnt what the different parts of a tree are called and what the leaves do. Then we thought about some trees that we already knew – fruit trees were very popular! Then we got our Spotter sheets (courtesy of The Woodland Trust) and began our TREE-sure hunt!

Mr Butcher had already checked the field and he thought that 3 of the trees on the sheet weren’t in the field, but then when we looked together we actually found one of them hiding down at the bottom! So even the grown ups had to work hard to work out what some trees were!

We all worked really well and did some great nature detective work outdoors…

But it didn’t stop there! We took some samples back to our Investigation Station to get a good look at the leaves under the magnifying glasses!

Art comes alive at Doddi!

In art we have been looking at the work of Wassily Kandinsky. We started by learning how to mix primary colours to make secondary colours, then we moved on to adding white and black to make tints and shades. After mastering how to make the colours we want, we looked at how different colours can represent different feelings and intentions. We found out how Wassily Kandinsky was one of the first artists to look at how shapes and colours can represent not just what we can see with our eyes, but how we feel inside too.

To finish off the topic we had a go at making our own Kandinsky circles with all of the shades, tints, primary and secondary colours that we’ve learnt about!
